France’s Marine Le Pen Promises to Ban Religious Clothing and Symbols, including Christian Ones, to Fight Islam

France’s presidential frontrunner, Marine Le Pen of the anti-Islam Front National Party took a strong stand back in 2015 when she said the European Union’s Muslim Invasion was comparable to the Barbarian invasion of Rome. While she had seemed to be a protector of Christianity, she has now promised to ban all religious clothing, including Christian symbols in an attempt to defeat Islam.

Christianity Today reports:

Marine Le Pen, the far-right leader in France, has promised to ban all religious clothing including Christian symbols, in a bid to defeat radical Islam.

The National Front chief enjoyed a surge in polls after recent terror attacks and is expected to come top or second in the first round of presidential voting in April.

She said on Sunday that Jews and Christians would have to accept the ban in order to “fight the advance of political Islam”.

If elected in April and May next year Le Pen, 48, said she would extend the current ban on religious symbols in state schools to all public spaces.

“I know this is a sacrifice, but I believe that the situation is too serious today.”

The proposed ban would include Christian crosses and Jewish kippah as well as Muslim garments like the hijab and burka.

France has had a long history of Christian thought in its civil government. Both Roman Catholic and Protestant theology has influenced the nation’s governing. Prior to the French Revolution in the 18th century, France recognized Roman Catholicism as its state religion. This was opposed by French Calvinist Christians, who were known as Huguenots. Of course, the Catholics were most famous for their persecution of Christians, particularly the Huguenots, at the time, specifically the St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre in 1572. Estimates of the dead range from 2,000 by a Roman Catholic apologist to 70,000 by a contemporary Huguenot of the time duc de Sully, who barely escaped death.

One of the things France had to grapple with at the time of the French Revolution was the rejection of God and anything that was biblically taught, such as a 7 day week. They learned quickly they could not function in such a manner.

So, knowing that France had once benefitted from Christian thought and God’s law in her history, even though some of those entrusted with it became tyrants, why would she give up that heritage in order to “defeat Islam.” That makes absolutely no sense. In fact, it’s surrender to the demonic doctrines of Muhammad.

No, the way to defeat Islam is with a superior Gospel, and the Christian message is just that. The Law of God in the Bible is superior to that of the Koran. The message that has a distant non-caring, non-loving nor a truly merciful God who forgives sinners is one that can be found in the texts of the Koran. However, though the Bible presents to us a holy and just God, it also presents us with His longsuffering, patience and compassion. In fact, if there was ever a question that the Creator loved men, it was in the demonstration He showed by clothing His Only Son in flesh and that Son dying in the place of those who had violated the law. As the apostle Paul writes:

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. –Romans 5:8

So, my response to Ms. Le Pen would be to reject outright the notion that you defeat the anti-christ ideology of Islam by banning the expression of Christianity in the public square. Instead, spread the message of God’s law and the presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout all of France and trust that God would work in the hearts of the people. I say that not only for France, but in every nation of the world so that all might submit to the lordship of King Jesus.
