Liberals Get Their Facts Wrong When Lecturing Kanye West

In recent days, Kanye West has been all over the news. His support for President Trump, his exhortation for all Americans to “think freely,” and his most recent comments about black America focusing on the past and keeping themselves enslaved have all caused major waves in the culture and media.

The left and the media have chosen to attack Kanye for his thoughts and comments.

When Kanye reminded everyone that it was Republicans who freed the slaves and fought to give them a voice during the Reconstruction era after the Civil War, his friend and music superstar John Legend told him that it was Democrats who fought for blacks during the mid-20th century. (This is blatantly false.)

Then CNN host Don Lemon jumped in and argued that Kanye should stop talking and “pick up a history book”

Here’s Lemon:

I just popped up because I look like when your dog is confused. But there is a lot. If you can put that last quote up where he says, the numbers were on our side. What does he mean by that? There were so many people of color that we could have fought slavery? What’s the percentage of African-Americans in this country now? We make up 10 to 12 percent of the population. How were we going to fight in lesser numbers in those times? His facts are wrong.

First of all, I think we’re witnessing someone who is obviously going through some things and it’s happening, unfolding on national television unfortunately, so I’ll just leave it at that because I don’t want to cast aspersions on people, but his facts are wrong. And I don’t mean this — I’m so upset by this story. I’m over it. I’m sick of talking about him. I want him to pick up a history book.

Now, Lemon’s not wrong when he says, “Kanye needs to realize it’s not a binary choice: you can remember your history, and you can also achieve. It doesn’t have to hold you there.” In fact, I would argue that to achieve YOU MUST remember your history. However, that’s not what Kanye was saying. Kanye was arguing that the black community in America has so fixated on the past, that they’ve entrenched themselves in it. Instead of using their history as a stepping stone to new heights, they’ve used it as a stumbling block to excuse their current failures.

It’s two different arguments.

But I’d like to go further and explain why Legend and Lemon both seem to be “whitewashing” history (for lack of a better word).

Today’s pundits like to pretend that somewhere between Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Era, the GOP and the Democrats exchanged places on the issues of black America. But this is just not true. In fact, it’s a damnable lie.

Let me prove it to you.

This is from something I wrote several years ago when former Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) argued that Republicans were against Barack Obama because he was black.

What in the world have we been arguing about since 1860? Oh wait, that’s right, at first we were arguing about skin color. Only it was Republicans battling Democrats (literally) over race issues. How about more recently? In the 1950’s and 60’s huge majorities of the Republican Party in Congress pushed through the Civil Rights Acts, even though the Democrat Party was in control of Congress at the time. See the narrative was that the Civil Rights movement was driven by Democrats, but the truth of history is that the Republicans were at the wheel of progress.

Measure House Republican For House Democrats For Senate Republicans For Senate Democrats For
Civil Rights Act of 1957 90%(167-19) 52%(118-107) 100%(43-0) 61%(28-18)
Civil Rights Act of 1960 89%(132-15) 66%(179 – 94) 100%(29-0) 70%(42-18)
Civil Rights Act of 1964 80%(136–35) 63%(153–91) 82%(27–6) 69%(46–21)
Voting Rights Act of 1965 82%(112-24) 78%(221-61) 94%(30-2) 75%(47-16)

My point is that the Republican Party has a history of siding with minority groups in America, even as we hold to our values as political conservatives. We are against illegal immigration – we are for legal immigration and immigrants. We are against socialist welfare programs – we are for the poor being given liberty to pursue free market opportunity to become economically prosperous. We are against higher taxes and government spending – we are for Americans keeping the money they earned and shrinking the scope of government.

Our inherent values fly in the face of the socialist programs that this President wants to pursue, so we must stand against him. Not for the color of his skin, which is meaningless, but for the content of his philosophy of government which is dangerous, destructive, and untenable.

You see as the chart above PROVES, the Republican Party was more supportive of America’s black community at least through the Civil Rights Act’s of the 1950’s and 60’s. Yes, the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 65, were signed into law by a Democrat President (Lyndon Johnson), but they were passed thanks to Republicans in Congress. And the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1960,  were passed and signed into law by Republicans!

So tell me, what happened in the 1970’s that somehow made the GOP anti-black?

NOTHING.

This lie, that the Democrats somehow became the Party of black America during the Civil Rights era is a crock and it should be unmasked whenever someone tries to pass it off as historical truth. It is fiction.

By the way, popular online personality, CJ Pearson has been attempting to educate John Legend about this very issue in recent days. Legend is proving to be a difficult student.

And finally, if you’re still not sure about how this HISTORY and FACTS stuff works, let Prager University enlighten you.
