Did Melania Trump Plagiarize Michelle Obama’s 2008 Speech?

Melania Trump wowed the crowd at the Republican National Convention as she spoke of her love for the united States after having come from Communist Slovenia.  However, it was not the positive things that she said that garnered the wrath of those who oppose her husband’s candidacy.  Rather, there have been claims that she plagiarized Michelle Obama’s speech. Yet, the hypocrisy in such a charge is evident to all who want to see.

“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life,” Mrs. Trump said.  “That your word is your bond, that you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect.”

“They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life,” she added.  “That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to or son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

Those few lines were attacked as plagiarism of Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech in which she said the following:

And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them.

And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.

Are those lines similar?  Sure.  Do they include some of the same words and thoughts?  Of course, but consider these First Ladies’ speeches from the past and see if you don’t get some of the same type of language.

Laura Bush said in her 2004 RNC speech:

“If you’re determined and you want to work hard, you can do anything you want to. That’s the beautiful thing about America.”

Hillary Clinton spoke similarly in 2014 at the New American Foundation:

“My mother and father gave us a middle-class life with opportunities she never could have imagined for herself but which she always believed could be possible for her children. And that was a great gift that I will be forever grateful for, and then Bill and I of course worked hard to pass on those values to our daughter.”

Ann Romney’s speech was similar in 2012:

“Mitt will be the first to tell you that he is the most fortunate man in the world. He had two loving parents who gave him strong values and taught him the value of work.”

What’s most telling is how Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama can blatantly plagiarize and not be called out on it.  Hillary has plagiarized her opponent Bernie Sanders so much that the Twitter hastag #StealTheBurn was created.

As for Obama, he clearly plagiarized George W. Bush’s speech in 2014 almost word for word.  Yet, the same people attacking Melania Trump didn’t seem to care that he did it.

Zero Hedge points out the several of Michelle Obama’s lines appeared in a book long before she spoke them in her speech, and concludes, “We leave it up to readers to decide if the alleged plagiarist plagiarized from another alleged plagiarist, and what – if any – message this sends about the ‘authenticity’ of US politicians.”
