Rand Paul Stands Against Budget Deal To Avert Government Shutdown

Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul is not his father. I know this, but he is one that has stood against clearly unconstitutional measures that have been presented to the united States Senate, and today was no exception as the Senate took a look at a budget proposal with massive spending that will send us further into debt.

While sellouts like Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) claimed to be voting on the proposal by the afternoon, it looks like things are not shaping up that way.

And why?  It’s because Senator Paul has a conscience about the spending in the bill.

Reuters is reporting that Paul is obviously bothered by the spending levels.

And apparently, Paul wants to be heard.

Thank God, there is still someone in the Senate that thinks constitutionally!

The Democrats seem opposed to the deal, but for unlawful reasons.  Zero Hedge reports:

Once again, it appears the bipartisan deal struck between Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell was too much, too soon. As part of the deal, the two agreed to extend funding through March 23 while lifting spending caps that were imposed as part of the Budget Control Act of 2011 (the famous sequestration bill) while tentatively working out a two-year budget deal that would increase both domestic and military spending, provide money for disaster relief, combating the opiate crisis and – oh yeah – raising the debt ceiling. The Treasury’s emergency measures are expected to be tapped out early next month.

As we noted earlier, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is refusing to support the deal struck by her fellow Congressional leader because she wants to force a vote on an immigration bill to preserve DACA protections – the subject of a historic 8-hour-long speech on the House floor yesterday.

In a letter to her Democratic colleagues today, Pelosi accused Speaker Paul Ryan – who says he won’t call for a vote on DACA without Trump’s approval – of “demeaning the dignity of the House” and defying the will of the American people.

President Donald Trump claims that the bill is very important due to the funding of the military in it.

“The Budget Agreement today is so important for our great Military. It ends the dangerous sequester and gives Secretary Mattis what he needs to keep America Great. Republicans and Democrats must support our troops and support this Bill!” he tweeted.

Well, yikes!  Look, why don’t we bring our troops home for goodness sakes?  Why are we in over 100 countries in the first place?  That is not about the defense of our nation.  It’s about empire building!

Bring our people home and let them defend the country.  Don’t engage in this soviet, Communist-style military parading.

If President Trump actually believes the things he says in the following, then a military parade is only about promoting pride, not defense and strength and trust in God.

While I agree with these sentiments, the presumption that a military parade demonstrates God’s blessing or that it demonstrates how powerful we are is the pinnacle of human pride.

The Scriptures warn:

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. -Proverbs 16:18

Some boast in chariots and some in horses, but we will boast in the name of the Lord, our God. -Psalm 20:7

Paul apparently spoke to President Trump about the matter.

“I told him to call up the majority leader, Senator (Mitch) McConnell, and tell him I wanted to have 15 minutes to have a vote to make a point that conservatives are unhappy with this deal,” Paul said in a Fox News interview.

The Washington Post reported:

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) expressed confidence Thursday that the bill, which delivers a military funding boost sought by the GOP alongside increases in domestic spending favored by Democrats, would pass.

“There is widespread agreement in both parties that we have cut the military too much, that our service members are suffering as a result, and that we need to do better,” he said.

The bill’s impact goes well beyond the Pentagon, however — renewing several large health-care programs, suspending the national debt limit for a year and extending billions of dollars of expiring business tax breaks. The cost of those provisions exceeds $560 billion, though lawmakers included some revenue-raising offsets, such as increases in customs fees and a sell-off from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

In comparison, the 2009 fiscal stimulus bill passed at the bottom of a global recession under President Barack Obama was estimated to cost $787 billion over 10 years. Republicans were nearly unanimous in opposing that measure in their clamor for fiscal restraint in the face of growing deficits — demands largely drowned out now in the Trump era.

This bill is more than just about the military.  We have the most powerful military in the world.  That isn’t in question.  What is in question is a ton of unconstitutional spending and debt!  Why will the people of America not stand with Senator Paul in speaking out against this?  Is it because a Republican is in the White House?  Is it because the Republican Party is in power?  Why?

We only have one Constitution, people!  Just one, and it isn’t Democrat or Republican.  Yet, time and again, we continue to approve of unconstitutional spending and promote it.

A government shutdown is in order, as President Trump said.  In fact, I’d love to see a government shutdown that resulted in a budget deal that actually was constitutional.

However, I fear I would be asking too much that representatives and the president actually know what the Constitution states about the limits of spending.
