When This Military Vet Took In His Late Sister’s Children, He Got A Special Surprise From Elderly Strangers

I love to have good news at times.  In fact, I used to post several stories a day in a column at FreedomOutpost.com titled “Good News.”  They are stories of victory, caring compassion and sometimes pure amazement.  This story is one that is truly what makes America great.  After three children lost their mother, their uncle took it upon himself to take them in and care for them, but with school approaching this military veteran took the kids shopping at Dollar Tree for school supplies.  Little did they know what surprise was awaiting them.

In a post on Facebook from Angela O’Neal Jacks, who was shopping at her local Dollar Tree in Gardendale, Alabama, on July 31, 2018, that has gone viral with a few hundred thousand shares, she told the story of how she ran into this veteran and the three children.

She noticed he was going through a list of items and apologizing to the kids that he was having to take them to Dollar Tree for supplies and didn’t realize how expensive items had become.  Yet, Jacks says that the children were “cheerful and nothing but thankful.”

The children had just lost their mother about three weeks prior.

So, being a Good Samaritan, Jacks sought to come over and offer some advice and see if she could help out.  That’s when the veteran told her the story of his sister’s death and how he had taken in the children when no one else would.

“(He) said they had needed complete wardrobes, backpacks, supplies etc. He was overwhelmed and also upset about the Dollar Tree, but was doing the best he could,” she wrote.

She was then going to provide more advice and give him some tips for saving money when an elderly couple approached them in the store.

“Sir, we have overheard your conversation,” they told the veteran.  “We were wondering if you would put all of this back and meet us at Wal-mart? We’d like to purchase all of their supplies, clothes, shoes and backpacks.”

“We’d like to thank you for your service to our country and to these kids,” the couple added.

Of course, even as I write this I am moved by this couple’s generosity, and so were all those there.

However, even with the thankfulness abounding, one of the children asked, “Can we get an MP3 player, too?”

Angela responded, “You sure can, sweetheart.”

Ms. Jacks was interviewed by Liftable:

She told Liftable (a brand of Western Journal) that as a mother of four, she knew how disheartening it can be to not own something most other kids at school do. “They had just lost their mother. I wanted to bring a little joy,” she said.

Meeting this sacrificial man and learning more about his story served as a sweet reminder for her.

She told Liftable, “It reminds me that we never know what someone else is going through and that we should be ready to help those in need in whatever way we are able.”

Jacks ended her Facebook post with thankfulness for men in her life that she believes would do the same thing in a situation as this veteran.

“This is a man who stepped up to take care of his sister’s kids,” she wrote.  “I’m thankful for a husband that is an amazing father, and for a brother whom I know would do the very same as this guy.”

I saw a man at Dollar Tree yesterday with his three kids and a school supply list. He was going over each and everything…

This is where the rubber meets the road, isn’t it, America?

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. -1 Timothy 5:8
