Stockton, CA — An innocent baby boy is dead and his mother is now fighting for her life after an apparently distracted San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputy smashed into their stopped vehicle with his cruiser. The horrifying crash was captured on a nearby surveillance camera and shows that the deputy never even attempted to slow down.

Little Kevin Hart III was only 13-months old and just beginning to walk when his life was taken from him over the weekend. His mother, Kalesha Johnson is currently in critical condition at San Joaquin General Hospital. Her father, Kevin’s grandfather, said her injuries are so horrific that he doesn’t even recognize her.

“We gotta all go through this. It’s sad, just sad,” said Kevin Hart Sr. “This is the first time I came up here to see her today. It’s hard for me. I went in there and I just turned around real fast, I couldn’t take it.”

Local news FOX 40 obtained footage of the crash showing Johnson’s car turn on her hazards and pull over for some unknown reason. Moments later, investigators with the California Highway Patrol say Deputy Kengie Yang rear-ended her.

“She put on her flashers or something or pulled over for some reason,” Hart Sr. said. “He didn’t slow down none, just bam.”

San Joaquin County sheriff Patrick Withrow explained to FOX40 that the incident is currently under investigation and that he has no knowledge of what happened — up to and including whether or not the cop was on a call. One thing is certain, however, and that is the officer did not have on any lights.

“I don’t even know if he’d been dispatched to a call or if he was just heading out to his routine patrol, I do not know,” Withrow said.

According to police, after witnessing the crash, several good Samaritans rushed to the scene performing CPR on Johnson as the deputy — apparently uninjured — tried to save the baby.

“Protect lives and help people and when something like this, an accident like this, happens it is emotionally devastating,” Withrow told FOX40.

According to the department, Yang has been with San Joaquin County for roughly two years, transferring over from Sacramento Police Department before then.

Although there is an active investigation into the crash, there have been no citations issued and no other information released to the public or the family. Our readers don’t have to guess whether or not a civilian killing a baby would be granted the same opacity in their case.

“What happened? I just want to know what happened. Why he didn’t see her,” Hart Sr. said.

While we don’t know the circumstance of what happened to cause this wreck, TFTP has reported on numerous incidents in which distracted cops — even criminally speeding ones — maim or kill people when they are at fault, and face no repercussions.

One moment, she is idling down the interstate in traffic and the next, more than a month later, she would wake up in the hospital, having been in a coma for weeks. She was struck by a cop who was not paying attention and who was driving 70 mph when he smashed his car into hers. He wasn’t paying attention because he was distracted by Grand Theft Auto playing in his cruiser. Seriously.

For crippling a woman while recklessly driving and watching movies, this cop was not fired. Instead, he was merely demoted and remains on the force.

Before that, a cop in Baton Rouge, LA was driving nearly 100 mph, off duty, when he smashed into a car, killing a baby. Although he wasn’t watching Grand Theft Auto, that officer didn’t even get a speeding ticket. He is still a cop too.

We will continue to follow this story to see how it plays out. If history is any indicator, however, even if Yang was watching porn on his phone at the time of the crash, he likely won’t face charges.
