First It Was Train Derailments & “Dangerous Chemicals” – Now, Minnesota Discovers Monticello Nuclear Plant Leaked 400,000 Gallons Of Radioactive Contaminated Water 4 Months After The Fact

Nearly four months ago, the Monitcello Nuclear Plant in Minnesota leaked a whopping 400,000 gallons of radioactive contaminated water in November 2022.  This revelation comes as the US is having countless train derailments and possible health concerns from spills and explosions.

CBS News reports:

MONTICELLO, Minn. — Minnesota state agencies are monitoring Xcel Energy’s cleanup of a tritium leak at a Monticello nuclear generating plant.

According to state officials, 400,000 gallons of water contaminated with tritium leaked from a water pipe running between two buildings at the facility. In late November, Xcel Energy confirmed and reported the leak to state officials as well as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

State officials say the leak has since been stopped and has been contained to the facility.

“This is a very localized leak, it is not migrated off-site, there has been no risk to public health or public safety,” Dan Huff, Assistant Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health said. “Our number one action was to stop the leak and excel did that the number two action is make sure that Xcel reclaims the water and they’re working on that.”

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says there’s no threat to drinking water or the nearby Mississippi River, but that the groundwater under the plant does move toward the river.

“There is no evidence at this time to indicate a risk to any drinking water wells in the vicinity of the plant,” the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said.

Xcel Energy says it has recovered about 25% of the tritium released, with recovery continuing over the next year.

“Our top priority is protecting residents and the environment, and the MPCA is working closely with other state agencies to oversee Xcel Energy’s monitoring data and cleanup activities,” Kirk Koudelka, MPCA assistant commissioner for land and strategic initiatives, said. “We are working to ensure this cleanup is concluded as thoroughly as possible with minimal or no risk to drinking water supplies.”

Listen, when these people tell you that there’s no threat to the water when they kept it under wraps for four months that nearly half a million gallons of radioactive water leaked from their power plant, you can be assured there is a threat to the water, and to the people that consume it.

The Minnesota Health Department makes the same claim:

The leak has been stopped and has not reached the Mississippi River or contaminated drinking water sources.

How can they be sure?

Well, they can’t be sure.   In fact, according to the Minnesota Health Department’s own site:

The company reported about 400,000 gallons of the water containing tritium leaked from a water pipe running between two buildings at its Monticello facility. The leak was stopped and the company is monitoring the groundwater plume through two dozen wells. An estimated 20% of the tritium has been recovered through extraction wells, and contaminated water continues to be pumped from the groundwater. The pumped water is currently being stored and some is being reused on site.

Next steps

Xcel Energy’s facility continues to operate during the cleanup. It is regulated by the About NRC | NRC.gov.

Minnesota state agencies are working with Xcel Energy on a permanent solution to manage the recovered tritium-containing water. Some options being considered include adding aboveground storage tanks or installation of a retention pond to store recovered water for treatment, reuse, or final disposal. These strategies would require permits from the MPCA.

So, the Minnesota Health Department didn’t actually take a look at any of this?  They merely relied on Xcel to tell them what happened and what they are doing about it?  Sure sounds like it from this propaganda government website.

On top of that, we’ll not near the end that the big deal for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) will be getting some big bucks for permits.  After all, that’s all corporate fascism is concerned with and that is what Minnesota is, just like every other state in the union, along with Washington, DC.  They don’t care about justice, health or actually governing.  They merely care about turning a profit.
