Is Immigration a “Top Priority” for Americans?

Donald Trump made his political path by using the ultimate wedge issue, illegal immigration, against his opponents. He wielded his politically incorrect rhetoric like a bludgeon, battering his GOP rivals with its oppressive weight. In the early days of his campaign, when it seemed as that Trump’s candidacy was nothing but a publicity stunt, it was his talk of building a wall on the Mexican border, and deporting every illegal immigrant that deigned to cross our border, that turned him into an unstoppable force in the Republican primary. By the time the other GOP candidates for the nomination realized what had happened… the race was all but over.

Since then Mr. Trump has not gone back on his original stance against illegal immigration, but he has wavered in his resolve and now some of his closest advisors seem to be attempting to shift the conversation around his campaign away from immigration and towards other “more important” political issues.

One such example comes to us from Ms. Katrina Pierson, who has been one of Trump’s most important mouthpieces. Pierson recently appeared on CNN where she told host Alisyn Camerota that Trump would never support amnesty, but that he could see illegal aliens being granted “legal status.” Pierson also argued, perhaps surprisingly, that immigration was “not a top priority” for most Americans, and so the media should focus on other areas of the campaign.

Here’s what Pierson told CNN:

Katrina Pierson: When it comes down to it, Mr. Trump’s governing principle is no amnesty

Alisyn Camerota: This is a big deal, Katrina. The idea that he might be open to legal status, also known as amnesty

Katrina Pierson: It’s actually not. Immigration is not showing to be a top priority for Americans in this election cycle.

Alisyn Camerota: Yes, but he has made it a big deal of his campaign. And he has said that every single one of them had to leave. Now, it sounds as if he’s open to amnesty.

Katrina Pierson: No, Alisyn, his governing principle is that if you are in this country illegally, you need to leave and return legally. That’s been his governing principle. He’s laid out these primary initiatives—one through ten, they’re on the website—so that he can let Americans know his priorities are not to go after families. His priorities are to go after the criminal aliens, after they build the wall, after they end catch-and-release, implement E-verify, and essentially eliminate all of the magnets that draw illegals into this country.
