Kentucky Compromises on Marriage – Won’t Require Kim Davis or Other Clerks to Sign Marriage Licenses

Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to sodomites and was jailed for it, won a victory for conscience this week. However, Kentucky continues to compromise on the marriage issue.

Leah Barkhoukis reports:

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin on Wednesday signed a bill that removes the names of county clerks from the state marriage license forms. Thus, for Christians like Davis, issuing a license to a gay couple will no longer carry the same sort of approbation it once did.

At the time, Davis said “to issue a marriage license which conflicts with God’s definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience.”

An apostolic Christian, Davis began denying couples the documents after the Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which legalized same sex ‘marriage.’

Senate Bill 216, signed by Republican Governor Matt Bevin, also creates a single form that either heterosexual or same-sex couples can use. Applicants can choose between being called bride, groom or spouse.

“We now have a single form that accommodates all concerns. Everyone benefits from this common sense legislation,” Bevin said. “There is no additional cost or work required by our county clerks. They are now able to fully follow the law without being forced to compromise their religious liberty.”

So, on the upswing, Davis doesn’t have to sign marriage licenses at all now. On the downside, Kentucky continues to compromise on the issue of marriage, and as I pointed out earlier, the issue of sodomy as a crime.

This is what happens when you argue only “religious liberty” and not states’ rights, which allows for the state to follow the Law of God rather than the opinions of men (and yes, SCOTUS’ ruling on marriage was merely their opinion, not law). Kentucky’s constitution is clear and defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman in Section 233A. The language was approved by nearly 75 percent of voters in the state. It also states that no other union will be recognized by the state except between a man and a woman.

So, why does Governor Bevin not simply ignore the Supreme Court’s ruling and follow the laws of his state regarding marriage, which are the same as God’s Law? Cowardice. Money. Threats, and a wide variety of things are probably in the mix. Additionally, Governor Bevin could be a compromised man himself.

In either case, while Kim Davis doesn’t have to sign these marriage licenses for sodomites, the reality is that it is a compromise for the true rule of law and for marriage, and you can count on the sodomites raising the issue further in the state.
