‘WE WON’T MISS HIM’ JACOB REES-MOGG BLASTS ‘UNSUCCESSFUL’ AND ‘CATASTROPHIC’ BARACK OBAMA
JACOB REES-MOGG has ridiculed Barack Obama as he said the former US President has been an unsuccessful leader due to his repeated failures in the Middle East.
By Lizzie Stromme, The Express, February 12, 2017:
The Tory MP hit out against the Democrat on Sunday when he locked horns with Labour MP Jess Phillips on Sky News.Appearing on Sophy Ridge’s show, the pair clashed over whether or not Mr Obama had been a good President. In a Gogglebox style setting, the MPs discussed footage from Donald Trump’s inauguration day.
Upon seeing Barack Obama leave the White House, the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley sighed as she declared: “Oh Barack, we miss you.”
Quick-wittedly, Mr Rees-Mogg retorted: “No, we don’t. He was a very unsuccessful American President and his foreign policy was a catastrophe.” Appearing to ignore the Tory MP’s remark, Ms Phillips insisted: “I think he was really successful, really brilliant and gave me hope for a better world.”
Having none of it, the MP for North East Somerset tore into Mr Obama’s leadership as he said the former president had let Vladimir Putin replace the US as the global power in the region.
Mr Rees-Mogg said: “He didn’t even manage to close Guantanamo Bay which he promised to do.
“He made a complete pig’s ear of Syria, and of the whole of Arab Spring.
“I’m not saying we did it brilliantly but America lost global leadership in the Middle East and has allowed Putin to take over in terms of policy formation in Syria.”Continuing to defend the Democratic politician, Ms Phillips insisted: “We could all be to blame for that but I’d still have Barack Obama any single day of the week. “I wouldn’t let Trump look after my children, let alone my country. I wouldn’t let him near any of my family.”
Slapping down the remark, Mr Rees-Mogg argued Mr Trump had a democratic mandate and the result of elections should be respected. He said: “The American people voted for Mr Trump and he has got a democratic mandate and I respect democratic mandates.” The Tory’s brutal assessment of Mr Obama’s presidency came after he on Friday lambasted ardent Remainer AC Grayling, who argued a majority of UK citizens wanted to stay within the European Union.
He said: “The figure gets lower and lower to Professor Grayling’s convince, the British people voted in a fair election and a majority voted to Leave and to call them ‘the British people’ is extremely fair.”
