Could Mass Immigration be Key to Destroy the Second Amendment?

UCLA professor Adam Winkler recently wrote a gloating article for the Washington Post, wherein he celebrated the fact that the demographic trends of America are working against gun rights. He makes a pretty strong argument too, since pretty much every minority ethnic group in this country seems to support stricter gun regulations.

“The core of the NRA’s support comes from white, rural and relatively less educated voters.” He writes “This demographic is currently influential in politics but clearly on the wane. While the decline of white, rural, less educated Americans is generally well known, less often recognized is what this means for gun legislation.” He backs up these statements with hard facts. While white Americans are less enthusiastic about gun control, 75% of Latinos and 80% of Asian Americans want more gun legislation, both of which are growing demographics in this country. Even 72% of African-Americans support more gun laws. Meanwhile, the traditional pro-Second Amendment strongholds in rural America are declining.

There is however, one fact that he has completely ignored. Even though the number of white voters has been falling for decades, Gallup pollsindicate that support for more gun control has fallen with it. In 1990, when the United States was significantly whiter, 78% of Americans wanted stricter laws, 17% thought they were sufficient, and 2% wanted the government to loosen gun laws. Today, only 47% want more laws, 38% think our laws are just fine as it is, and 14% want more gun rights. It makes you wonder doesn’t it? Even though most minorities aren’t enthusiastic about the Second Amendment, are they slowly coming around to gun rights?
