Heroic Teen Drives Directly in the Line of Fire to Save Injured Woman
Caleb Martin, an eighteen-year-old young man from Tennessee, was driving home from his job at McDonald’s back in January. Seeing a woman in the road and a car swerving, which he believed to be a drunk driver, Martin realized what was going on and took action.
Mr. Martin realized that the driver of the car was not drunk, but was, in fact, aiming his vehicle for the woman, who had been shot twice already.
“It was horrifying,” he told WKRN.

“I thought he was a drunk driver until I saw he was swerving … into her,” Martin said. “As she tries to evade the car, he hits her into the guardrail.”
Martin drove between the car and the woman, who was already pinned against the railing on the side of the road.
“The first thing I thought was, am I going to die?” Martin said. “But I thought, she might die and it’s about her. It’s not about me.”
Honking his horn resulted in the man in the car driving off as Caleb called 911 and opened his door for 28-year-old Jenna Newman.
He hurried her over to his grandmother’s house, where they waited for paramedics to arrive.
“I promised her I wouldn’t let her die,” Martin said, according to the 911 call.
She was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and was in serious condition, but later released.
Newman’s boyfriend, 68-year-old Kenneth David Clinton, had just given Newman a ring. However, Newman wanted to break up and that seems to be the catalyst for what set him off to murder her.
Clinton was later found dead in Newman’s car with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
As for the heroic efforts of young Martin, he waved any claims to heroism. “I’m pretty sure a lot of people would have done it,” Martin said. “I didn’t do anything too special. I was just there at the right time.”
Well, I can say that there are a lot of people who would have done what this young man did, but still, the fact remains, he did it when it came time to act. This was truly a selfless act of love by Martin for a woman he didn’t even know. Well done Caleb, well done young man!
