Lord of the Rings Actor: Unless We find Our Moral Compass, We will Lose Our Civilization

Welsh actor John Rhys-Davies, best known for his role as “Gimli” in
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
and “Sallah” in the
Indiana Jones Trilogy
, recently called out the West for their silence in light of the attacks against Christianity that are taking place around the world.

“There is an extraordinary silence in the West,” Rhys-Davies said on Adam Carolla’s podcast, pointing out the persecution and martyrdom of Christians across the Middle East, mostly at the hands of the Islamic State. Listen to the podcast below.

“Basically, Christianity in the Middle East and in Africa is being wiped out – I mean not just ideologically but physically, and people are being enslaved and killed because they are Christians. And your country and my country are doing nothing about it,” he added.

The actor then warned, “We have lost our moral compass completely, and, unless we find it, we’re going to lose our civilization.”

Yes, much of what he says and the way he says it is reminiscent of the speech that is used in
The Lord of the Rings
, but even that language is timeless. It’s just men have forgotten how to speak that way in our politically correct culture.

Carolla responded to Rhys-Davies comments by saying, “This notion that we’ve evolved into a species that’s incapable of judging other groups and what they are doing, especially when it is beheading people or setting people on fire or throwing acid in the face of schoolgirls — I like that kind of judging. It’s evolved!”

“This is a unique age. We don’t want to be judgmental,” Rhys-Davies said. “Every other age that has come before us has believed exactly the opposite. I mean, T.S. Eliot referred to ‘the common pursuit of true judgment.’ Yes. That’s what it’s about. Getting our judgments right.”

“It’s an age where politicians don’t actually say what they believe,” added Rhys-Davies. “They are afraid of being judged as being partisan. Heaven forbid that we should criticize people who, after all, share a different value system. ‘But it’s all relevant. It’s all equally relative. We’re all the same. And God and the devil, they’re the same, aren’t they, really? Right and wrong? It’s really just two faces of the same coin.'”

Indeed, Mr. Rhys-Davies! Too many people, especially whimpy Christians want to cite Scripture out of context so that they won’t have to make serious judgments. They’ll cry, “He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone…” or the ever popular “Judge not lest ye be judged…” However, they never understand the context those verse are presented in nor do they realize that by throwing those passages out, they are in fact making a judgment about those to who they cite them.

Jesus was clear about judgment. All judgment, as far as ultimately accountability is His. Yet, He also taught His disciples to:

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. – John 7:24

This was merely the entire teaching of the Old Testament. Over and over were judged by God because they failed to judge righteously.

John Rhys-Davies, an open Christian, has presented wise words that we should take heed to, not only for the preservation of our civilization, but for our very souls.
