New video shows the complete and callous disregard for life by officer Ricky Anderson as he casually executed Donavon Lewis in his own bed.

Columbus, OH — Last week, TFTP reported on disturbing body camera footage out of Columbus, Ohio, released as part of a push for transparency in the city. The footage showed police enter the apartment of 20-year-old Donovan Lewis who was undressed, in bed, and was attempting to raise his hands when he received a fatal, taxpayer-funded 9mm round to the chest.

The video went underreported in the media for several days and now, new video has been released showing the complete and callous disregard for life by officer Ricky Anderson as he casually executed Lewis in his own bed.

Despite the warrant for his arrest, Lewis was innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately, he was denied that right.

For some reason, Columbus police thought it was a good idea to serve an arrest warrant at 2:30 a.m. at Lewis’ apartment. Footage shows multiple officers outside Lewis’ door knocking for several minutes before one of the man’s roommates opens the door. Moments later, officers would open the door to Lewis’ bedroom and execute him.

“We need to get rid of middle of the night arrest warrants unless there’s a dangerous emergent circumstance,” said the family’s attorney, Rex Elliot. “We need to have police officers who are trained to come into these communities that understand these communities.”

“After Andre Hill a lot of things have been put in place, there’s been a lot of talk, but there hasn’t been a lot of action,” said Lewis’ mother, Rebecca Duran said at a protest for her son on Thursday. “I want to see real action. I say it, it’s a colloquial saying, ‘don’t talk about it, be about it’. let’s see something happen, not just conversation after conversation.”

That night, Anderson who was handling a K-9, enters the apartment with multiple officers who have guns drawn before making their way to the bedroom of Lewis.

“We’re gonna send that dog in,” one of the officers says in the video.

Lewis was asleep in the back bedroom and as cops push open his door and startle him out of his slumber, he sits up in bed before Anderson puts a round in his chest.

New video footage shows just how carefree and nonchalant Anderson was when he fired the round that killed an unarmed young man. Anderson casually shoots the unarmed man, holsters his weapon and then acts like nothing ever happened.

“He had something in his hand,” an officer yells in an attempt to justify the execution. But Lewis was not armed. The only thing found in his bedroom was a vape pen.

After they shot him, Lewis writhes in agony in his bed as officers continue to scream at him to “show me your hands.” Lewis tries to comply with their orders but he cannot.

“Hands” an officer yells repeatedly for several seconds before telling Lewis to “crawl out here!” But Lewis, with a bullet in his chest, could not crawl.

As Lewis struggles to hold on to the last moments of his life, one of the officers yells, “I’m going in, cover me,” as if he’s in a warzone. In reality, however, he was walking into a dying unarmed man’s bedroom.

“Put your hands behind your back, now!” an officer screams at the dying man.

Lewis, unable to comply as he bleeds out in his bed, is then told to “stop resisting,” as his executioners force his body into handcuffs.

As we reported last week, no medical aid was given to Lewis in his apartment. Officers did not even attempt to stop the bleeding until after he was dragged from his apartment. By then, however, it was too late. Nearly an hour after entering the apartment, Lewis would be brought to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:19 a.m.

As TFTP has reported numerous times, early morning raids do nothing but add confusion and danger to the interactions as individuals are usually asleep and do not realize that the intruders are police. This execution was a prime example of the problem with early morning raids.

Though Lewis wasn’t armed at all, the fact that cops barged into his bedroom at 2:30 a.m. created a dangerous scenario for both Lewis and the officers. All too many times, we’ve seen officers shot and innocent individuals killed as a result of these dangerous raids.

Lewis, who was wanted on a warrant for improperly handling a firearm, assault, and domestic violence will never have his day in court and his parents will now live the rest of their lives knowing police killed their unarmed child — all because they decided to go to his home at 2:30 a.m.
