Nine people in Florida have been charged with taking benefits from deceased veterans, bilking the Department of Veterans Affairs out of $800,000 in the process.

These nine individuals, ranging between the ages of 50 and 60, allegedly stole government funds originally intended for deceased veterans or their beneficiaries, according to an announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami.

In other words, these people declined to notify the VA that beneficiaries of the benefits had died, allowing them to continue raking in cash from the department. In one example noted by the U.S. Attorney’s office, this scam carried on for 14 years before being brought to light.

In another example, 54-year-old Judy Jasiecki kept receiving benefits her mother was entitled to for six years, even though her mother had passed away. Jasiecki managed to collect more than $74,000, but now has to pay that amount back.

The VA Office of Inspector General and Criminal Investigations Division both were involved in the deep investigations before handing off the case to the Department of Justice for prosecution.

If the people involved with allegedly bilking the VA are convicted, they could land in prison for up to 10 years.
