Trump: Get Set For A “Very Long” Government Shutdown

Earlier in the week, it was reported and seemed to be confirmed by White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders that the Trump administration was going to cave on a government shutdown over border wall funding.  On Thursday, the president rejected a bill that had passed the Senate and told Republicans he was not going to sign it without funding for the wall.  On Friday, it appears no one is closer to an agreement about funding the building of the wall, and President Trump has issued a warning that people need to buckle up for a “very long” government shutdown if things are not settled by midnight on Friday.

Taking to Twitter on Friday, the president issued a flurry of tweets as the shutdown lingers.

“The Democrats are trying to belittle the concept of a Wall, calling it old fashioned. The fact is there is nothing else’s that will work, and that has been true for thousands of years. It’s like the wheel, there is nothing better. I know tech better than anyone, & technology …..on a Border is only effective in conjunction with a Wall. Properly designed and built Walls work, and the Democrats are lying when they say they don’t. In Israel the Wall is 99.9% successful. Will not be any different on our Southern Border! Hundreds of $Billions saved!” Trump tweeted.

While the wall will certainly impact illegal aliens crossing the southern border, even better would be to add the elimination of the welfare state that lures them into the US on the taxpayer dime and the warfare state that forces them from their countries.

“No matter what happens today in the Senate, Republican House Members should be very proud of themselves. They flew back to Washington from all parts of the World in order to vote for Border Security and the Wall. Not one Democrat voted yes, and we won big. I am very proud of you!” Trump added.

Trump then warned, “The Democrats, whose votes we need in the Senate, will probably vote against Border Security and the Wall even though they know it is DESPERATELY NEEDED. If the Dems vote no, there will be a shutdown that will last for a very long time. People don’t want Open Borders and Crime!”

“Shutdown today if Democrats do not vote for Border Security!”

“Senator Mitch McConnell should fight for the Wall and Border Security as hard as he fought for anything. He will need Democrat votes, but as shown in the House, good things happen. If enough Dems don’t vote, it will be a Democrat Shutdown! House Republicans were great yesterday!” Trump tweeted.

He then exhorted McConnell:  “Mitch, use the Nuclear Option and get it done! Our Country is counting on you!”

Trump then thanked Steve Daines for his support of the nuclear option following a tweet from Daines that read, “House just passed a bill that fully funds government and enables @realDonaldTrump to secure our border/build the wall. Senate can do same by eliminating the filibuster. 51 votes, same as we do for judges!”

“Thank you for being willing to go with the so-called nuclear option in order to win on DESPERATELY NEEDED Border Security! Have my total support.”

“Even President Ronald Reagan tried for 8 years to build a Border Wall, or Fence, and was unable to do so. Others also have tried. We will get it done, one way or the other!” Trump crowed.

OK, well, I suppose this one is for all the political marbles, if you will.  This is probably his biggest campaign promise besides promising to order his Attorney General to appoint a special prosecutor to look into Hillary Clinton, which has not happened yet.

One of Trump’s biggest supporters, author Ann Coulter, blasted him as gutless for not sticking to his guns on the wall funding after the news broke earlier this week that the administration would cave.

I still have not determined whether this is a very smart political move ahead of Christmas to put pressure on Congress to fund the wall or whether it is just more political theater.  On can argue the wall is to keep illegals out or to keep Americans in.  Perhaps it is both, but the more pressing question on my mind is the length of shutdown.

We know from the past that even with a partial shutdown of non-essential government employees, which begs the question of why they are there in the first place, always results in a paid vacation for those people.  My question is this:  When you and I don’t work, do we get paid?  Nope.  So, why will we go back and retro pay non-essential employees for work they did not do?  Seems pretty stupid to me.

I say an agreement needs to include language that also does not retro pay those laid off in a similar manner to when a civilian employee is laid off they don’t get paid either.

With that said, I welcome the government shutdown.  With that in effect, it seems that perhaps they won’t be able to do anything worse for the time being than they already have.

Stay tuned.
