Long’s only “crime” appears to be what is colloquially known as “contempt of cop.”

Sheffield, AL — A chilling example of law enforcement overreach surfaced in Sheffield, shedding light on a deeply disturbing abuse of power. Civil rights attorney Harry Daniels has branded the incident as nothing short of a “crime against humanity.” His client, Marvin Long, an unarmed 53-year-old man, suffered a violent K9 attack orchestrated by the Sheffield Police Department (SPD).

The SPD claims that Long was “resisting arrest.” However, as recently released body camera footage shows, the disturbing events unfolded on the front porch of Long’s home in June 2021, where Long was merely observing the police making an unrelated arrest. Long’s only “crime” appears to be what is colloquially known as “contempt of cop.”

Bodycam footage presents a starkly different narrative than the one pushed by the SPD. The video shows Sheffield Police officers aggressively seizing Long on his porch after a verbal exchange. Daniels, Long’s civil attorney, is deeply troubled by what led to this exchange, and even more so by the manner in which the police responded.

“The video kind of speaks for itself,” Daniels told WHNT. “There was no resistance there. You cannot resist an unlawful arrest, that’s a law.”

The footage begins with a verbal exchange between Long and the officers, as Long was watching an arrest being made in front of his home. The verbal exchange escalated, leading to Long holding onto the frame of his front door, followed by several officers pulling him down — for watching them make an arrest.

The terror didn’t end there. As Long cried out for help and officers escalated their attack, an officer ordered the K9 to bite him.

Daniels emphatically insists that such a brutal law enforcement response was entirely unnecessary. “Mr. Long was a bystander, and you can call him a concerned citizen or a nosey neighbor,” Daniels explained. “Nevertheless, he wasn’t breaking any laws, and he was subjected to profanity and unwarranted action by the police who subsequently came up and ripped him off his porch and had a dog bite him, which he did suffer significant injury.”

Court records show that Long was charged with obstruction and resisting arrest. Highlighting the unnecessary police action that day, he was later acquitted of the obstruction charge. However, they are still seemingly attempting to justify a portion of their actions by pursuing the resisting arrest charge.

“We believe that the charge is frivolous, unwarranted and unjustified but nevertheless he is still being prosecuted as such,” stated Daniels.

Long is set to face a pretrial hearing for the resisting arrest charge, with his trial slated for June 6th. The video below is a testament to the gross injustices that can occur when unchecked power meets contempt of cop.
