The video is yet another disturbing reminder of the misuse of power that’s all too common within America’s security force.

Cody, WY — The disquieting reality of overzealous policing was recently displayed in Wyoming when a traffic stop of a local 17-year-old high school student led to a case of police brutality and exposed the arresting officer as a liar. The incident, captured on dash and body cams, was posted to the LackLuster YouTube channel. The video is yet another disturbing reminder of the misuse of power that’s all too common within America’s security force.

Officer Blake Stinson’s nine-minute interaction with the youth left many questioning the validity of the officer’s actions, among them state Rep. Clark Stith, an attorney and state representative from Rock Springs, who spoke to Cowboy State Daily about the attack. Stith pointed out the unnecessary aggression shown by Officer Stinson and criticized his behavior and the subsequent implications it has for the Cody Police Department.

The video, headlined “Dash Cam Proves Cop Wrong — Case Dismissed,” showcased this officer’s blatant disregard for due process and his affinity for dishonesty. Officer Stinson stated that he pulled the young driver over for nearly hitting a pedestrian, a claim clearly refuted by the video evidence.

Stith commented, “First off, you knew right away it was going to be an interesting interaction… This is the first one I’ve seen where the officer really had no reason to be aggressive.” The escalation, he said, appeared unwarranted. “In this case, the officer just started fighting with the driver from the get-go, and that just sets the tone for the whole interaction…And, it looks like the kid didn’t even commit the traffic infraction in the first place.”

The teen’s apprehension and confusion during the interaction were palpable. The officer’s refusal to communicate with the teen’s mother, whom the teen called for guidance, exacerbated the situation. What followed was a verbal and physical altercation that should never have transpired but because of the officer’s power trip, progressed to full-on tyranny.

The entire incident, particularly Stinson’s assertion that he “could smell marijuana in the vehicle,” and his aggressive attempts to remove the teenager from the car, demonstrate an alarming misuse of power. While the driver did fail to provide his ID, the officer’s heavy-handed and aggressive tactics were wholly disproportionate.

Stith explained that Stinson’s misrepresentation of the incident to other officers — indicating that the driver almost hit a pedestrian who had to swerve to avoid the car — was blatantly false according to the dashcam footage. “When he embellished what happened, that stinks. We hold (police) in such high esteem… and it really hurts law enforcement to lie to other law enforcement about what happened,” Stith said.

The teen’s mother, Teresa Piper, expressed her frustration over the handling of the incident, pointing out that Stinson had a history of following her son. The experience left the youth bruised and shaken, the traumatic event unfolding before his peers at Cody High School and will likely set the teen up for a hefty lawsuit — funded by the taxpayers of Cody.

Cody Police Chief Chuck Baker has acknowledged the video, stating that the incident is under investigation. He cautioned viewers to be wary of edited videos, despite Stith’s insistence that the video’s editing does not alter the shocking nature of the interaction.

Piper believes Stinson is a “bad apple” among an otherwise commendable police force in Cody, while Stith hopes the video will encourage much-needed change. “Cody deserves better than this, Wyoming deserves better than this, and I hope this officer gets whatever remedial training he needs,” he said.
