Arizona State Rep. David Cook, a Republican, was arrested Wednesday night in Mesa and charged with driving under the influence.  He reportedly told one of the officers, “You’ll get yours.”

Cook was tested to discover that he was at almost twice the legal limit with 0.158 blood-alcohol content.

After he was pulled over, Cook told an officer, “Do you know what you’re doing, son? You’re making a mistake,” according to a Department of Public Safety (DPS) report. He also said it was “fine” when he was told his license would be suspended because his wife works for the state’s Motor Vehicle Department, the report stated.

“I’m fine, don’t worry, you’ll get yours,” Cook told an officer, according to the DPS report.

Apparently, once Cook sobered up and realized what he had actually done and how he behaved, he at least went public with an apology.

Cook took to his Facebook page.

“I learned a valuable lesson the hard way last night, so I want to share it with all of you so you can learn from it as well,” he wrote.

“No lunch, no dinner, and some drinks with friends sounds harmless enough, but get behind the wheel and try to drive home and you’re taking a chance you just shouldn’t take,” he continued. “I’m lucky, because I got pulled over and got a DUI, but there was no accident, no one got hurt, etc. I’ll be paying a real price for it, and it’s a humiliating experience for sure, but compared to what can happen when someone drinks and drives, the good Lord was looking out for me.”

Well yes, perhaps to give you space to repent Rep. Cook.

He then praised those who upheld the law.

“The DPS officers who handled the matter behaved professionally and did their job well,” Cook wrote.  “I didn’t request or receive any sort of special treatment as a result of holding office, as it should be. I’ll be facing a judge and very real consequences which I’ll keep you all updated on as they occur.”

Cook then apologized and exhorted others not to follow in his footsteps.

“I apologize to all of you because I hold myself to a higher standard and I’ve let everyone down, friends and family alike,” he wrote.  “But let’s not let this be a wasted experience. If you’re out, you’ve had drinks, and there is ANY question in your mind as to your state of readiness, call a cab or a friend. Don’t be worrying about Christmas presents in the back seat or anything like that, because those are all really small things compared to the big things. Again, I’m sorry for what I did and I’ll keep you all posted on the process as it moves forward.”

Now, I don’t know if he was sorry he got caught or sorry for what he did.  God sees the heart there.  However, he confessed his violation of the law, and encouraged others not to behave in a similar manner.  To me, that sounds similar to the end of the prayer of King David in Pslam 51.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.  Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.

Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.

Whether Cook is genuine remains to be seen, but at least it appears he was humbled by what happened.

Earlier this year, Arizona State Rep. Paul Mosley (R–Lake Havasu City) was caught going 97 mph in a 55 mph zone and bragged to the police officer about going 120 mph earlier.

Let’s pray that Rep. Cook is truly repentant in this matter.
