California AG’s Wife One of Only Two to Vote Against Cracking Down on Sex Trafficking

Laws only exist to the extent that they are enforced.

Even by the standards of a pro-crime party and a pro-crime state, the refusal of California Assembly Democrats to crack down on sex trafficking created a nationwide scandal forcing Gov. Newsom to take the unusual step of intervening by phoning the Republican sponsor of the bill to express his support and to urge his fellow Democrats to stop protecting sex traffickers.

A day after rejecting a bill that would have classified child sex trafficking as a serious felony under California law, the Assembly Public Safety Committee is facing intense scrutiny from Democratic state leaders, including Gov. Gavin Newsom, who are vowing to address the issue.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle were shocked Tuesday when the bill didn’t have enough votes to clear the Assembly Public Safety Committee, with all six of that committee’s Democrats abstaining from the vote.

The governor noted last year’s state budget earmarked $25 million for services for children who had been victims of sex trafficking. “I want to understand exactly what happened yesterday,” Newsom said. “I take it very seriously.”

The vote finally happened, but with some notable exceptions.

Days after facing political blowback for blocking a bill that would have classified child sex trafficking as a serious felony in California, the state’s Assembly Public Safety Committee was forced on Thursday to hold a special hearing to vote on the bill again and approve it.

The measure passed 6-0, with two Democrats, Assemblymembers Mia Bonta and Isaac Bryan, not voting.

Mia Bonta is the wife of Attorney General Rob Bonta who succeeded him. Because California is a “democracy”. The bill was passed because Gov. Newsom didn’t want it to look like he was presiding over a pro-crime hell (which he is), but laws only exist to the extent that they are enforced. Considering Mia Bonta’s resistance to putting away sex traffickers, can her husband be counted on to do his duty?
