Senate Keeps Telling a Very Frustrated Trump “No!” on the Save Act

Trump’s demands may mean no more reconciliation legislation this year, a welcome event.

Threat to Kill Wanted Legislation

Truth Social: The Republicans agreed with Dumocrats to remove very fair, and talented, William Pulte, from serving as Acting DNI in return for getting FISA approved by the Dumocrats. However, the Republicans moved so fast with the hearings of the Great Jay Clayton, current U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, that Pulte would be gone before the Dumocrats would vote on FISA. Now, the Dumocrats are saying they will vote against FISA — So, the Republicans wound up having fulfilled their commitment, but Dumocrats broke the Deal. In addition, the newly nominated U.S. Attorney, Jamie McDonald, must be confirmed and blue slipped. Because of the ridiculous views of Republicans on blue slipping (Dumocrats are often willing to nix it), I may not be able to get the extraordinary Sullivan & Cromwell Partner, Jamie, approved, and I don’t want to take Jay Clayton away from the great job he is doing until Jamie is in place. Therefore, to add a slight bit of intrigue but, for the Good of the Nation, and the People of our Country, I will not approve FISA without THE SAVE AMERICA ACT going along with it. Not complicated, actually, the Republicans fell into a trap. Regarding the approval of our Great Patriot, Jay Clayton, we are cancelling the Senate Hearing RE: DNI today, and will not be going forward until Jamie McDonald is approved to be U.S. Attorney. In the meantime, Bill Pulte will remain as the Acting Director of National Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Trump Blasts Utah Over Mail-In Voting

Truth Social: It seems as though the Great State of Utah, which I won each time, and handily, is going to the All Mail In Ballot format of Colorado, and the rest, that always head LEFT, as soon as the move is made. We should stop Utah from doing this. All Mail In Ballots, dishonestly handled, are a big advantage for the Dumocrats, whose only Road to Victory, because their Policies are so insane, is CHEATING. Does the Republican Party have any idea what is happening to it? Step by step, State by State, the Democrats are smiling all the way to the “Bank.” Stop the onslaught by either immediately terminating the Filibuster and/or pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Trump Calls Republican Senators Fools

Truth Social: Anybody who doesn’t want to Terminate the Filibuster is a FOOL, a very stupid one, at that! The Dumocrats will end it within minutes of taking office, and then rapidly proceed to destroy our Country, adding 2 Radical Left States, 4 Dumocrat Senators, many Congressmen/women, their dream of 21 Supreme Court Justices (Not just 13, an unlucky number!), an impossible to beat number of Electoral College Votes (and that’s the Ballgame!), “Popular” Vote Landslides, and so much else. The Republican Party will never win another Election. I will, sadly, be the last Republican President. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and the Republican Senate, must not let this “carnage” happen. They will go down on the wrong side of History, as will all Republicans who just stood by and watched. The Republican Party isn’t at stake, our Country is. TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, AND IMMEDIATELY APPROVE THE SAVE AMERICA ACT. GOD BLESS THE U.S.A. President DONALD J. TRUMP

A Bizarre Setup

Note how bizarre this is. Trump has bundled voter-ID with totally unrelated ideas like men in women’s sports, transgender mutilation, and now the FISA Act renewal that allows spying on US citizens.

The SAVE Act itself is very discriminatory against women and minorities and I believe it is unconstitutional.

The more things you link to a bill, the harder it is to pass.

I have been discussing this since March.

There are no votes to kill the filibuster, no votes to remove Thune, and there are not 60 votes to pass the Save Act.

Contrary to popular myth, the Save Act is not a budget item, so it needs 60 votes, not 50, to pass, and there are not even 50 votes.

Trump blames Thune for this. But Trump’s key problem is that there are not 50 votes to end the filibuster, even if the Senate removed Thune, which they won’t because Thune is much more liked than Trump.

On Fox News this week, Thune said the votes weren’t there for the voting-eligibility bill, which would require Americans to provide documentary proof of citizenship to vote. “The only way you can get this done is to nuke the legislative filibuster,” Thune said. “And this is not something that we have anywhere close to the votes to do.”

Trump Refuses to Accept Reality

The Wall Street Journal reports Trump’s Frustration Grows as Senate GOP Leader Keeps Saying ‘No’

President Trump wants Republicans in Congress to do exactly as they are told.

But recently he has been hearing a lot of “no” from John Thune, the Senate’s top Republican.

That has led to open conflict as Trump tries to push through a voter-ID law that he has said is crucial to Republicans’ winning the midterms but lacks enough support to pass. It is one of a series of disputes that have intensified pressure on Thune, the lanky South Dakota conservative who finds himself in an increasingly difficult political position just months ahead of the elections.

Trump’s impatience boiled over Wednesday when he issued a social-media missive that disrupted bipartisan efforts to confirm Jay Clayton quickly as the director of national intelligence—and block Trump’s ally Bill Pulte from taking the job. Trump also blew up negotiations with Democrats to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. To make matters more complicated, Trump bundled both with the contentious voting bill.

About FISA

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) is a U.S. federal law enacted in 1978 that establishes procedures for the physical and electronic surveillance and collection of foreign intelligence information between foreign powers and agents of foreign powers. It is highly significant due to the ongoing political debates over its privacy implications.

FISA outlines several key authorities and provisions:

  • The FISA Court (FISC): Created by the law, this specialized federal court meets in secret and reviews classified government applications for surveillance warrants targeting foreign agents.
  • Section 702: Added in 2008, this provision permits the U.S. government to intercept the electronic communications (emails, text messages, phone calls) of foreign targets located outside the United States without an individualized court warrant.
  • “Backdoor” Searches: While Section 702 is aimed at foreigners, it incidentally sweeps in massive amounts of Americans’ communications. The FBI, CIA, and NSA are legally permitted to query this database for U.S. citizens’ data, a practice that has caused severe controversy and prompted pushback from privacy advocates.

Political Realities

Since I am against FISA, I am happy Trump bundled it with the Save Act and other silliness.

I hope he bundles more and more garbage with it, too, because more garbage is harder to pass. And the best thing now is that nothing passes.

I want to see no more spending on the military (or anything else), no FISA, no budget reconciliation bills, and no Save Act.

The only thing I am strongly confident of is that the Save Act is going nowhere. But there is also a distinct chance we see no more budget reconciliation bills this year.

Unfortunately, the Uni-Party wants to spy on US citizens, so I expect that it will eventually pass without the Save Act.

Three Reasons the Save Act Is Unconstitutional

On March 4, I commented Three Reasons the Save Act Is Unconstitutional

1. Congress Lacks Authority to Impose Voter Qualifications.

2. Violation of the National Voter Registration Act and Supremacy Clause Issues

3. Undue Burden on the Fundamental Right to Vote

Also see my follow-up post SAVE Act Silliness: Trump’s “Go for the Gold” Killed It

The SAVE Act is unconstitutional. Trump want to make it worse. Only fools think they know more than Thune.

Despite having a firm conviction that the Save Act would be ruled unconstitutional, I would rather not find out.

Fortunately, there is only a tiny chance the Save Act passes (I suggest 2 percent, Polymarket is 11 percent).

It’s far more likely that Trump’s nonsense kills another reconciliation bill.

By the way, Trump lost control in Iran, in the Senate, and his global status is in the gutter where it belongs.
