President Donald Trump took his shiny new Qatari Air Force One plane for a spin on Wednesday, and he couldn’t have been more pleased. “Frankly,” Trump said happily, “we couldn’t build a plane like this because we wouldn’t be willing to spend the kind of money necessary.” Before jetting off to North Dakota, Trump added: “It will be the first flight of what I think is maybe the greatest commercial plane ever built ‘What’s the best one?’ They said, ‘This is the best plane ever built,’ and you’re gonna have the privilege of flying it, and I have the privilege also of flying it.”
The president was just as happy with the givers as he was with his new gift. He said that the plane “cost very little” to U.S. taxpayers to fit it out with everything it needed to serve as Air Force One, “relative to what it would cost if we did it a different way.” Trump explained: “This was a gift from a country that’s treated us very well. And they’re an ally of us over in the Middle East, Qatar. The Emir Tamim, who’s a great gentleman, he said, ‘No, no, I’d like to make a contribution to the country.’ So, it was very nice.”
Very nice indeed. Trump did not, unfortunately, explain what has changed since June 2017, when he said: “The nation of Qatar, unfortunately, has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level…. The time had come to call on Qatar to end its funding. They have to end that funding. And its extremist ideology in terms of funding. I want to call on all other nations to stop immediately supporting terrorism.”

Nor did Trump or anyone else say anything about a June 29 report on Qatar’s Al-Araby TV, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn, better known as Custer’s Last Stand, which took place on June 25, 1876. To the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) states that the Qatari report featured video of “Native Americans dressed in traditional attire can be seen dancing and jumping over an American flag lying on the ground. According to the report, the commemoration marked the 150th anniversary of America’s defeat at the battle.”
The report featured onscreen text reading: “Dancing and jumping on an old American flag on June 25, 2026, during a celebration of the 150th anniversary of America’s defeat. What’s the story? The Lakota tribe, a Native American community, celebrated the 150th anniversary of its victory over the American forces in the famous Battle of Little Bighorn. During the celebration, some of the Natives danced over an old American flag that was placed on the ground. The celebrations also included horse shows, drumming, and a reenactment of the battle.”
One Lakota man was quoted as saying: “It’s more of a symbol of remembering our ancestors and remembering how hard they fought.” Then followed more onscreen text, reading: “The battle, which is known as ‘the Battle of the Greasy Grass Field,’ took place on June 25, 1876, in Big Horn County, Montana, in the Northern United States, where the warriors of the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes defeated the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the American army, under the command of George Armstrong Custer.”
The report also featured a woman going into full victimhood mode, explaining that Custer’s
“last stand, it was also our last stand, because the U.S. government was never going to let us do that again.” Another onscreen text added: “The Battle of Little Bighorn is considered to be one of the most important victories of the Natives because it is a symbol of resistance and unity for them.” A Lakota man concluded: “This victory just shows how we came together at one time, you know, and we beat the government.”
A feature of historical interest. A human interest story. Sure. But it’s not an insignificant detail that Al-Araby TV, which hews to the Qatari government’s line, would suddenly show an interest in a long-ago American battle which is distinctive primarily for being a defeat for the U.S. government. Why would a country that has “treated us very well” suddenly be so interested in a historic U.S. defeat? Could they be working to defeat us again now? Inconceivable, right? Right?
