The warmongers in the US Senate will never have enough fo Afghanistan and Syria and other wars in the Middle East.  After President Donald Trump called for an end to “endless wars,” the US Senate voted to keep troops in Syria and Afghanistan.

The US Senate voted 70-26 in favor of keeping US forces in both countries.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that he still believes ISIS and al Qaeda are still significant threats and that “a precipitous withdrawal” may only bolster their efforts.

“I’ve been clear about my own views on these subjects,” McConnell told reporters last week after the Senate pushed his amendment through.

“ISIS and al Qaeda have yet to be defeated,” he added. “Withdrawal of the United States forces from the ongoing fight against these groups . . . could allow terrorists to regroup, destabilize critical regions, and create vacuums that could be filled by Iran or Russia, to the detriment of United States’ interests and those of our allies.”

Rand Paul ripped into McConnell and other senators.

Paul blasted McConnell’s amendment on Monday evening after the vote, accusing him and other senators of forming a “war caucus.”

“What is the one thing that brings Republicans and Democrats together?” Paul asked reporters. “War — they love it. The more, the better. Forever war, perpetual war.”

Paul offered praise for Trump for being “bold enough and strong enough” to bring the troops home.

“We are no longer fighting anyone who attacked us on 9/11,” he said.

Paul added, “I would like to ask unanimous consent that we get rid of the resolution condemning the President and that we replace it with a resolution that says simply this: that we applaud President Trump for being bold and brave enough to consider bringing our troops home, declaring victory and ending America’s longest war.”

He also tweeted out a barrage of tweets against the Senate warmongers, both Democrats and Republicans.

Finally, after 17 years, we have a President bold enough to declare victory and bring our troops home and the warmongers have the gall to claim that coming home, after 17 years, is precipitous?

These same supporters of forever war argue that if we set a timetable for coming home that we are telegraphing to the enemy our plans and our actions are too deliberate.

While the Constitution authorizes Congress to declare war before we are to engage in military action (something they never did in Syria, even though they authorized military action in Afghanistan following 9/11/2001), it doesn’t claim that Congress has the authority to declare with the war has ended.  In fact, most people don’t know it, but the president is not commander-in-chief all the time, just when Congress calls up the military or the militia in service to the united States.

So, Trump could thumb his nose at the Senate vote and tell them they don’t have any authority to do what they did, declare the war has ended and just bring the troops home… oh, and stop funding Islamic jihadis like the White Helmets.  That would go a long way too, Mr. President.

My guess is that Trump will just go along with the Senate and leave troops in place.  This is a real opportunity to challenge the separation of powers.
